We’re excited to offer Sea Kale root cuttings this year! You will receive robust cuttings between 1.5-2” in length that can be planted as is or cut in half for the potential to establish four plants. Those more comfortable with root propagation could even get as many as six or more plants out of just these two cuttings.

Sea Kale is reliably propagated from root fragments and for the patient gardener is by far the most cost-effective way to build up your plant stock. In our trials we have found near 100% success with root fragments as small as ¼” in length. That being said, success can not be guaranteed as many factors are at play when propagating plants.

For best results in the Winter we recommend placing root cuttings in well-draining soil on bottom heat. In Spring and Summer you can plant these cutting directly into the ground. It generally takes anywhere from 1-3 months for the root cuttings to begin producing fragile sprouts and developing roots. At this point the root cuttings should be placed in their permanent location. These young starts should be very well established after their second season. In our experience we have had a nearly 100% success rate when starting sea kale root cuttings this way.

Sea Kale (Crambe Maritima)

A gorgeous “edimental” that makes a great addition to any perennial garden. Sea Kale is very hardy and once well established, yields copious quantities of thick, but tender leaves very similar to common garden kale. We find Sea Kale leaves to be superior in texture and flavor.

*Patience and adherence to the recommended growing guidelines will give the best chance of success.
